While the Boxster facelift - due to be unveiled at the LA Auto Show this November - and the tweaked Cayman - coming out early next year - won’t be anything revolutionary, CAR has revealed speculated that big changes are underfoot for the 911, taking technology, power delivery and driver comfort to levels never thought possible in the iconic coupe. REPORT: Porsche considering 914 revival (Autoblog)
Filed under: Convertibles , Sports/GTs , Porsche , Volkswagen Click above for a hi-res gallery of the Porsche 914 Once every 40 years or so, when the stars are aligned just right, there arises the cosmic possibility for Volkswagen and Porsche to collaborate on a small sportscar. The stars in question seem to be Porsche chairman Dr. Ferdinand Piech, a spirit of takeover cooperation between the two German automakers, and the input of third-party contractor Karmann. It was Dr. Piech, the same man who has been driving Porsche’s takeover of the Volkswagen group, who had ushered the original Porsche 914 into reality. But when Volkswagen launches its latest concept at the LA Auto Show this November, it hopes the little Elise fighter will garner enough attention to put the project into production as soon as 2011 with versions for both VW and Porsche. The original Porsche 914 was based largely on borrowed Volkswagen mechanicals. Karmann was also heavily involved in the 914 project, and could be tapped once again to build the new sportscar for both Volkswagen and Porsche, with the project potentially spawning an Audi R4, as well. Although some sources suggest the Porsche version could adopt the 2.7-liter flat six from the base Boxster, with Zuffenhausen admittedly considering the possibility of going back to four-cylinder engines , anything’s possible. Sources point out, however, that the four-cylinder version of the 914 was the top selling model. While you consider the idea of a budget Porsche, check out the high-resolution images of original 914 images in the gallery below. A Fleet Manager’s Opus: One Rough Week of Driving at NextAutos

Some weeks are just better than others.

The NextAutos staff is lucky enough to have access to a rotating weekly fleet of press vehicles that run the gamut from entry-level budget wheels, to hyper-expensive exotic sports cars. And while on most weeks there are a few cars whose keys could cause a scuffle, every now and again the fates align to make us truly spoiled for choice.

<!–break–>We were stupendously excited with our options over the last few days, finding ourselves the short-term guardians of some truly spectacular machinery. Porsche’s latest Cayenne, the GTS, rubbed shoulders with the luxurious Mercedes-Benz CLS550, as well as the hard(er)core SL63 AMG. There was also a pair of handsome Italians from Maserati beautifying our parking spaces, a Quattroporte sedan and an undeniably sexy GranTurismo. Audi’s European spec A4 with the brilliant 3.0-liter TDI (loaned to us by Bosch), may not have the massive price tag to keep up in this company, but that hasn’t stopped us from falling quite utterly in love with it (it’s a looker too).

We’ve got plans to bring you in-depth fleet reviews and impressions about each of these phenomenal machines, but we couldn’t let the moment pass without having a little fun with our super-lux horde. Below you’ll find a few back of the napkin calculations about the total prowess and expense of our big six, as well as the fleet specs averaged out below it. Then make sure to browse our impromptu photo shoot of the group in the gallery above.

Spy Shots: New Porsche 911 GT3 spied in Spain (Autoblog)
Filed under: Spy Photos , Sports/GTs , Porsche Hardcore Porschephiles rejoice, for Stuttgart is preparing a new 911 GT3. It should come as no big surprise since the entire 911 range has once again received a facelift, so following the Carrera , Carrera 4 and Targa models, we can expect a new Turbo, a new GT3 and a new GT2 . Apparently the naturally-aspirated hardcore model is the next up to bat, if these spy shots snapped cliffside in Spain serve as any indication. The shots make for easy comparison: the new GT3 seems to blend elements from the outgoing model and its yet more hardcore brother the GT3 RS, both of which can be seen alongside the new test mule (second from the right, straight on till morning). Expect the same updates found on the rest of the revised range, plus a wing that lies somewhere in between that found on the current GT3 and the current GT3 RS. The centrally-mounted exhaust pipes look bigger than the previous version, but that’s all we can tell from the rear shots at this point. With a little patience, we’ll be able to see the new GT3 undisguised shortly. [Source: World Car Fans ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Porsche Prepping Hardcore Cayman RS?

After recently seeing spied images that hinted towards a possible RS version of Porsche’s popular Boxster , new evidence in the form of this photo set would seem to indicate that the Cayman may be getting the RS treatment as well.

The blazing orange Cayman S seen here has an expanded rear wing which is fixed in position, as well a set of splitters up front that would indicate an enhanced model. A Cayman RS would theoretically be stripped down for advanced performance on the track, perhaps even getting a mild bump in power in the process.

We’ll likely know for certain what exactly Porsche is up to after the Geneva Motor Show next March, and are free to let our imaginations wander in the meantime. Scroll down to read the shooter’s own words and check out the beefy Cayman in our gallery above.

Last month we showed you a possible Porsche Boxster RS with big fixed wing in the rear. Now it’s time for a possible RS version of the Cayman.

With a different front spoiler with splitters, and a bigger rear spoiler this Cayman looks different than the normal Cayman S. In this case the rear spoiler also looks like it’s fixed.

Whether it’s really a RS version or not, our guess is that we have to wait at least until the Geneva Car Show in March to get an answer. But it sure looks interesting and we also believe that a lot of Porsche freaks would love a hard core stripped out Cayman RS.

We can just dream about 30-40 horsepower more and 100 kg less. But sometimes dreams come true.

Our First Look at the Next Generation Porsche Cayman?

New product development appears to be in full swing these days at Porsche. In the last few days we’ve already seen glimpses of what appear to be RS spec models of the current Boxster and Cayman, and now comes evidence that the sports car builder is working on an entirely new generation for both models – possibly hitting the market as early as 2012.

The Cayman mule shown in our clandestine photographs reveals bolt-on wheel arches which are a good indicator that a wider track is in store for the new car. We can also expect that the next gen Cayman will get Porsches all-new PDK dual-clutch gearbox, as well as the next generation direct injection engine technology.

Our spy shooter has also gotten word that this generation Boxster and Cayman could get a platform mate in the Volkswagen line, though the VW would likely only get four-cylinder engine options.

Porsche has started development of the new platform for the next generation Cayman and Boxster as seen on these photos. This new generation will partly be build by Magna Steyr in Austria instead of Valmet in Finland.

The wider wheel arches give it away that the track might be slightly wider than the current model, but hopefully it want grow too much in length.

Some of the new features that will already come in the facelifted versions of the current model, due in spring 2009, will of course also be available in the new generation. Like the new PDK dual-clutch gearbox and the new engines with fuel direct injection. Rumors are also talking about a VW sports car based on the same platform, but probably just with four-cylinder engines. New Cayman and Boxster is due for 2012.

Next Generation Porsche 911 Spied!

While Porsche has just finished launching its new 911, the car is really more of a half step between true generational changes for the seminal sports car. So with the 997.5 911 heading out to customers, the German automaker has unleashed the very first stages of its test program for the next car, the 998 model 911.

The Porsche faithful will be unsurprised (and no doubt a bit relieved) to see that the 998 seems at first blush to be another tiny step in the glacial visual evolution that is 911 design. We can make out a set of more robustly blistered fenders, hinting at a slightly wider track, but not a lot else at this point to differentiate the car from its 997 older brother. Expect more and further visual changes as the spy shots continue to roll in, before the car makes its expected debut in 2011.

Scroll down to read the shooter’s own words.

The 997 facelift has just been official, and that was the sign that the test crew from Porsche where waiting for. Now they can concentrate them self in testing the next generation 911, probably named 998.

Here are the first photos of that early test mule. We can clearly see the wider fenders on this prototype indicating that the car at least seems to be wider, length still looks the same. But we have to remember, this is still an very early mule and a lot can change until 2011 when the 998 is expecting to hit the showrooms

The Porsche 968

What Makes Porsche Cars Extraordinary -

The Porsche 968 is the successor of the Porsche 944. It?s great to look at ? its wide wheel arches and its low nose as well as its drop-dead gorgeous lines which makes it very like the Porsche Guards.

Red?s classic shape. The front engine is a classic GT with a rear wheel drive layout and it also has a rear transaxle which means that the weight is distributed perfectly, giving it an added advantage. When it comes to the headlights, unlike the Porsche 944, this car has pop-up headlights, not hidden ones. So in looks, they are very much like the new Porsche 997-911 and the advantage is that from a practical point of view, the headlights can be washed along with the rest of the car without having to wash them only after popping them up.

The insides have that famous ?oval dash?, the same as the 944. The materials are strong and this is what has seen so many people so satisfied with the trouble-free motoring their Porsche gives them. Outside you?ll find a few differences ? you?ll see that the wheels have a 5-spoke cup design alloy. The door mirrors have a streamlined tear drop effect and the rear bumper has integral rear light clusters and it is blended and quite indistinguishable from the bodywork. These changes in the bodywork tend to make the 968 a lot like the 928 in looks and with the added engine heritage, it?s been called the ?daughter of 928? by some.

Let?s take a peek at the engine. This is a 4 cylinder, 16 valve unit, 3 liter version of the engine first used in the 944 S2. What?s been added is the VarioCam to give it optimum power right through the speed range. With a 240 HP at 6200 rpm, it also has a torque of 305 Nm at 4100 rpm which is thanks to the improved combustion chamber as well as the inlet manifold design. It was a great engine when it was introduced as it had the highest displacement per cylinder in any car engine as well as the highest torque output known in any unblown 3 liter engine. Porsche knew what it was doing, investing in this engine. The gear box is rear-mounted and is a 6-speed manual or 4 speed tiptronic. The chassis is very stiff and makes for almost perfect weight distribution.

A lot of cars fall below what is perfect when it comes to brakes. It?s not enough if you pass muster when you are driving fast in a straight lane. Can you take a bend at the same speed safely? You need Porsche brakes for that. Even sports cars envy their brakes. However harsh the usage, the Porsche 968 has hardly any fatigue. The great braking system is made even better thanks to ABS. And in case of sudden pressure, you can rest assured the wheels will not come off as they are designed so the tire does not come off the rim.

Maximum Mowing: The Porsche 911 Lawn Tractor

Most of the time our crack team of spy shooters is crisscrossing the globe in search of undiscovered automotive treasures, but it seems that hunt doesn’t occupy all of their time.

Our loyal man over at CarPix sent over these images of his friend’s well-modified garden tractor, one that has a distinct Porsche theme. This 911-inspired mower has got small but thoughtful touches like a tachometer housed in an old Porsche oil filter, a free-breathing exhaust, and a fire-extinguisher in case things get a little out of hand in the backyard.

There’s no word about whether the small tractor is any faster than a normally equipped one, but it definitely will grab the neighbour’s attention. Schneller!

Here are some shots of a little toy that a friend of mine made.

Painted in Grand-Prix Weiss with Indischrot details and wheels. Notice the rpm-meter made of an old oil filter from a 911, and the hmm….bigger exhaust pipe. And of course, the fire extinguisher.

With this machine it will be more fun to work in the garden. This is a must for every Porsche fan and it’s so cool.

The Ten Worst Non-Automotive Product Tie-Ins With Automotive Brands [Ten Non-Automotive Product Automotive Tie-Ins] (Jalopnik)
The Porsche-branded kitchen earlier this week reminded us that automotive marketing gurus like to use their considerable name equity to brand products having nothing to do with cars. While sometimes this can help increase brand identity with the masses, here’s our list of the ten auto-branded products which decrease brand equity and dilute brand stature. 10. Jeep Stroller Though parents haven’t been buying Chrysler vehicles as quickly as the company may like, they love those Jeep-branded strollers. With a reputation for toughness, the baby-moving business isn’t a huge stretch for the brand. If they could get as many families into Jeep Commanders as they could into Jeep Commander Strollers the company might be in better shape. [ JeepWorld ] 9. Renault F1 Backgammon Set In addition to branding special-edition cars, like the Renaultsport 197 Clio , the Renault F1 team has spread into the fast-paced world of table gaming. Made of real Formula One materials like carbon fiber, sterling silver and F1-style glass laminate, the Renault backgammon set is quite fetching. Even more impressive than the board’s careful design is the set’s $27,000 price. 8. Hummer Drinking Glasses When we think about the current plight of the Hummer brand, we suddenly think we want a stiff drink. That’s why we’re glad HUMMER offers officially licensed drinking glasses, large enough for a few ice cubes and a few ounces of Wild Turkey. And while drinking alcohol and driving cars are two hobbies we think should be kept separate, Hummer offers them on their special branding website along with Hummer golf balls and Hummer spare-tire covers. At just $21.95, it’s just the fraction of a cost of a fill-up. [ Hummer Stuff ] 7. Ducati Flash Drive Why is there a Ducati Flash Drive ? Because Harley doesn’t think their buyers know how to use a computer. In addition to looking a lot like a Ducati bike, the flash drive achieves a 20MB read/write speed, making it the fastest consumer drive offered by SanDisk. Oh, and there’s a special lanyard! 6. Mini Cooper Luggage Automaker-branded luggage isn’t unique because associating your brand with all forms of travel is an easy connection. But we have to give extra credit to Mini for their branded luggage , which is not only small but also features more than just a “Mini” emblem. The lining of the bags are in the style of a Union Jack flag, and the rolling wheels look like Mini wheels. A Cooper-esque laptop bag is also smart branding given that every other Mini owner also has a MacBook. 5. Porsche Gaming Gear The Porsche gaming wheel is sure to capture the hearts and minds of those aspiring for a supercar when they move out of the room over their parent’s garage. The shifter looks great and it’s a lot closer to being auto-related than most useless Porsche-branded products. 4. Asus Lamborghini Smartphone Any automaker can brand a phone, but props to Lamborghini for branding one killer smartphone . Quad-band GSM? Check. Tri-band WCDMA? Check. GPRS and Edge? Check. Real GPS? Check. Most Lamborghini owners won’t know what any of that means, but Lamborghini has successfully positioned itself as a brand always at the extreme. 3. Bugatti Cologne If you’re willing to spend $1.3 million on a supercar, should it be that much of a stretch to spend about $2,750 on a cologne? If you can’t afford a Bugatti, at the very least you can smell like one. Delivered with a special holder in a carbon fiber briefcase, the Bugatti cologne is audacious in way that only such an exclusive automaker could pull off. [ YouTube ] 2. Ferrari Segway There’s a risk to lending your name to a different form of transportation, but when you’re Ferrari and said product is a gyroscopically controlled Ferrari Segway scooter you have a perfect gift for the Ferrari owner who can afford anything. While the Ferrari Segway doesn’t go any faster and still costs $12,000, it’s got that great red paint job and says to other Segway users that you’re willing to go the extra mile to prove you’ve got money to burn. 1. NASCAR Brand Meat Snacks If you asked the average NASCAR fan what they loved most they’d probably say “stock car racing.” If you asked them the thing they loved second most was, it would probably be prepackaged meat products. Whether it’s a hot dog or a burger, NASCAR meat is the ultimate non-automotive auto tie-in. And, to cap off the unparalleled achievement of finally bridging the gap between pork products and oval track racing, the marketing geniuses behind this grabbed the slogan “Taste The Excitement.” It’s just so…beautiful. Filed under: In the Autoblog Garage , Sports/GTs , Porsche Click above for high-res gallery of the Porsche Carrera S As we approach the 45th birthday of the Porsche 911 and the dawn of yet another generation, we’ve finally managed to snag one in the Autoblog Garage for a full review. The 911 is the most direct descendant of the very earliest sports cars to wear that legendary German automotive name. It still uses the same basic layout as the first Porsche, the 356 (except for prototype No.1, which was mid-engined) with a horizontally opposed engine hanging out behind the rear axle. Of course, the 911 has two more cylinders now, and these days the engines are cooled by liquid rather then air, but the basic premise remains. Even though the 911 has gone through five generations, with another refresh for 2009 arriving momentarily, it remains instantly recognizable as what it is. Even with what some may consider an archaic drivetrain layout, the 2008 Porsche Carrera S remains one of the finest sports cars in the world.

Porsche Slowly Taking Over of Volkswagen

Second Coming: The 2007 Porsche Boxster -

The increase of Porsche?s stake from 27.3 percent to 30.9 percent at Volkswagen gives the German sports car manufacturer the right to a takeover bid as required by the German law.

Luckily for Porsche, Volkswagen shares dropped by 4 percent to 113.21 euros ($150.91) in Frankfurt on Monday afternoon while the German sports car maker?s share rose by 0.7 percent to 1,123 euros ($1,497). And as expected of Porsche is has cleverly made the minimum offering legally allowed of 109.20 euros (145.60) for each common share and 63 euros ($84) for each preferred share.

Porsche has already expected it that few investors would agree on their offered price. After the takeover bid is complete it is probable that Porsche will continue to increase its stakes in Volkswagen surpassing its present owned shares of 30.9 percent. However, if it plans to make another bid for VW it will have to exceed 50 percent stakes.

What Porsche has done can be considered a creative way of going around the German corporate law but it did not do it simply because it wants to gain control of Volkswagen. Believe it or not the German sports car maker just wants to protect Europe?s largest automaker from any untoward takeover by hostile foreign investors. And with the 30.9 percent owned stake of Porsche combined with the 20.26 percent owned shares of Lower Saxony totaling to 51.4 percent of shares at Volkswagen makes these two shareholders more effective in protecting the company from any investors who may want to take control of the Wolfsburg-based automaker.

Aside from protecting Volkswagen, Lower Saxony has also assured that the jobs of tens of thousands of its residents who worked for VW are safe. Porsche on the other hand, secures an essential source of technology in which it has the power to control costs. Like for instance the chassis used for Porsche Cayenne down to say VW spark plug wires that are used for the mid-size luxury sports utility vehicle are developed in partnership with Volkswagen.

Volkswagen said in a statement that it welcomed the step by Porsche to increase its take and explained that a ?stable shareholder structure? is vital to the continuous success of the company. According to one unnamed source inside Volkswagen, ?We are protected against further other approaches maybe by other investors which could break up the company.?

Analysts are also expecting for Porsche to gradually increase its stake in Volkswagen over the next few years in line with the goals of Porsche?s main shareholder and chairman, Ferdinand Piech.

VW Parts Make GTi the People’s Porsche

Porsche: Refuse to be Defeated by Ford, Holden -

The Volkswagen GTi was introduced in 1976 as the high-performance variety of the German automaker?s VW Golf. It was among the first in the compact cars class to use a fuel injection system. With the then world standard in sports car technology fitted on the VW GTi, the car was nevertheless kept within the buying power of most people and consequently became known as the People?s Porsche.

Considered the progenitor of the hatchback genre, the VW GTi is credited for making the VW Golf the company?s bestseller. As of 2006, the sports compact version of the VW Golf has undergone a total of five style and trim improvements. The current VW GTi generation is billed as the most-improved VW GTi make, a return to form of Volkswagen?s first successful sports compact car.

Equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder engine and a fuel stratified injection technology, the Volkswagen GTi boasts of a 200 bhp standard performance. The remarkable power competence of the VW GTi is kept in a tight rein through a 6-speed manual transmission. The GTi is made more dexterous with the introduction of a direct shift gearbox transmission system.

All VW GTi makes are available in either a 3- or 5-door hatchback body style. VW GTi parts that come in optional trims include power sunroof, racing-inspired steering wheel, supplemental grab handles, and an anti-lock braking system on its 4-wheel disc lock brakes. These VW GTi parts are not included in the stock features of the VW GTi, yet are not a drawback on the performance of the car. These VW GTi parts are often customizable items used to furnish the car with a distinct look and feature. Installing these Volkswagen parts basically depends on the driving style of the owner.

Aside from a performance-tuned engine and aerodynamics body style, the suspension setting of the VW GTi is considered another high point in the car?s engineering. Featuring a multilink control blade, the rear suspension assembly of the VW GTi is the acknowledged class bench benchmark for car handling and driving. Composed of a network of struts, sway bars, shocks, and links, the VW GTi suspension system parts are anchored on a wishbone arrangement suspension. Universally used on most race cars, the VW GTi suspension assembly parts give stability to the car in the face of hard and fast drive applications.

The suspension system of the VW GTi is to car handling what the fuel injection system is to performance. While the fuel injection system furnishes the VW GTi engine with more quality fuel materials, the suspension system equips the car with the stability that it needs to ride the car in comfort and ease. From engine to car suspension, it is the VW GTi parts installed on these assemblies that many consider to be the greater light in the GTi engineering.
